AUTOMATED INSTRUCTION, DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT, AND REMEDIATION
Teacher Resources Inc.'s management team has over two decades of experience in developing educational software products. The on-line, independent self- paced study product that the team created in 1997 was used for 15 years by more than 2,000 public schools to improve their academic programs. Approximately 1.5 million students used this online software to recover credits and to graduate from high school. Over that time period, more than 99% of the school systems using the product renewed their yearly contracts, some for the entire 15 years.
IN SPITE OF WHAT WE, AS WELL AS OTHER PROVIDERS, INITIALLY BELIEVED ABOUT THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SELF-PACED INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAMS, RESEARCH CONDUCTED BY JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY'S CENTER FOR SOCIAL ORGANIZATION OF SCHOOLS AND THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS' DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SHOWED THESE TYPES OF INDEPENDENT SELF-PACED STUDY SYSTEMS WERE NOT EFFECTIVE IN PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH A LIFE-LONG EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE. THE STUDIES FOUND THAT STUDENTS WHO USED INDEPENDENT STUDY AS THE SOLE SOURCE OF THEIR INSTRUCTION, FAILED TO RETAIN AS MUCH AS 50% OF WHAT THEY HAD LEARNED IN AS LITTLE AS SIX WEEKS.
THE MASSACHUSETTS STUDY ALSO REVEALED 11 "ESSENTIAL CONDITIONS" THAT SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS MUST PERFORM ON A DAILY BASIS, IF THEY WISH TO HAVE AN EFFECTIVE ACADEMIC PROGRAM. UNFORTUNATELY, THESE 11 ITEMS ARE SO TIME CONSUMING AND LABORIOUS THAT FEW TEACHERS, IF ANY, CAN PERFORM THESE TASKS AND STILL HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO DELIVER THE INSTRUCTION, ASSESSMENT, DIAGNOSTIC, AND REMEDIAL TASKS NEEDED TO DELIVER AN EFFECTIVE ACADEMIC PROGRAM.
IN FACT, NUMEROUS EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE NATION SUPPORTED THIS FINDING DUE TOTHEIR BELIEF THAT SELF-PACED, INDEPENDENT STUDY DID NOT PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS WITH THEIR TEACHER AND STUDENTS TO CORRECT THE MISCONCEPTIONS AND ERRORS MADE BY THEM ABOUT WHAT THEY HAD READ. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS WITH READING DIFFICULTIES HAD LITTLE CHANCE OF CORRECTING THE MISTAKES SIMPLY BECAUSE INDEPENDENT STUDY HAD NO PROVISIONS FOR THEM TO SELF-ASSESS THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MATERIAL ON A CONTINUAL BASIS AND TO BE AUTOMATICALLY PROVIDED WITH REMEDIAL MATERIAL WHEN SUCH HELP WAS NEEDED BY THEM.
THIS INFORMATION HELPED US TO CREATE A BLENDED LEARNING SYSTEM THAT INTEGRATED BOTH TEACHER-LED AND INDEPENDENT SELF-PACED STUDY WITH A SERIES OF 11 APPLICATIONS THAT MANAGED THE INSTRUCTIONAL, ASSESSMENT, DIAGNOSTIC, AND REMEDIAL TASKS NOW BEING CONDUCTED MANUALLY BY TEACHERS. AS A RESULT, TEACHERS CAN NOW FOCUS ALNMOST ALL OF THEIR IN-CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES IN ENSURING THAT EVERY STUDENT HAS MASTERED AND RETAINED WHAT THEY HAD LEARNED.
